Academic Procrastination: A Cultural Perspective from Aceh, Counseling and Guidance Students.Abstract
This correlational quantitative study aims to examine the relationship between goal setting and academic procrastination tendencies from the perspective of Acehnese culture. Through purposive sampling, 30 Guidance and Counselling students at UIN Ar-Raniry from the class of 2024 were selected as the sample. Data were collected using a digital questionnaire and analyzed using Spearman’s Rho correlation test. The results showed that the majority of students’ goal setting was classified as very high (96.7%), while academic procrastination predominantly fell into the moderate (40.0%) to high (36.7%) categories. The results of the hypothesis testing using Spearman’s Rho correlation test yielded a significance value of 0.090, since the significance value was greater than 0.05 (0.090 > 0.05) with a correlation coefficient of 0.315, indicating no significant relationship between goal setting and academic procrastination. This phenomenon reflects an “intention-behavior gap,” in which religious values and the institution’s vision encourage high levels of goal setting, yet communal social interactions (such as the coffee shop tradition) often trigger procrastination. Nevertheless, this academic procrastination remains predominantly influenced by low levels of self-regulation, time management, and individual personality dynamics.
