Abstract

Amid the rapid and uncontrollable growth of social media use, concerns have emerged regarding its impact on mental health, particularly the tendency toward social anxiety. This study was conducted to identify the influence of self-esteem and body dissatisfaction on social anxiety tendencies among adolescent social media users, both partially and simultaneously. Social anxiety refers to fear of social situations and the anticipation of being evaluated, observed, embarrassed, or judged by others. This study employed a quantitative method with a sample of adolescent social media users. The sampling technique used was snowball sampling. Data were collected using psychological scales, namely the Social Anxiety Scale for Adolescents (SAS-A), Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES), and Body Shape Questionnaire-34 (BSQ-34). The data were analyzed using multiple regression analysis. The results showed that self-esteem and body dissatisfaction had a significant partial and simultaneous effect on social anxiety tendencies. The coefficient of determination indicated that both independent variables contributed 89.6% to social anxiety tendencies, with an effective contribution of 7.5% from self-esteem and 82.1% from body dissatisfaction.
