The transformation of Indonesian State Islamic Higher Education Institutions (PTKIN) from STAIN or IAIN into a State Islamic University (UIN) is often understood as a change in institutional status and organizational structure. However, it also requires a reconstruction of academic mandates, governance, knowledge integration, and institutional identity. This article examines the rationale for the transformation, reconstructs the institutional trajectory of Sultan Aji Muhammad Idris State Islamic University (UINSI) Samarinda, and discusses its implications for knowledge integration and academic identity. It employs a literature-based, descriptive-critical approach and a documentary case study. Sources include regulations, institutional documents, and scholarly publications on institutional change and knowledge integration in Islamic higher education. The analysis combines institutional chronology, organizational categorization, and conceptual synthesis. The findings interpret UINSI’s trajectory through six stages: institutional dependence, autonomy, differentiation, expansion, integration, and consolidation. The article proposes an analytical framework connecting these stages with three levels of knowledge integration: structural, academic, and epistemological. It argues that university status is an enabling condition rather than automatic evidence of substantive integration. Such transformation requires consolidation of curriculum, human-resource capacity, interdisciplinary research, governance, quality assurance, and academic culture while sustaining Islamic distinctiveness. The article’s contribution is a synthesized framework linking institutional evolution and levels of knowledge integration to analyze the post-transformation agenda of PTKIN, using UINSI Samarinda as a documentary case.
